The Thames Barrier is one of the largest moveable flood barrier in the world. It protects 125 square kilometres of central London, over 375,000 properties, historic buildings including the Houses of Parliament, offices, power supplies, tube lines and hospitals to a name a few.
The Barrier is also one of London’s most striking and famous landmarks. With its distinctive stainless steel piers it spans 520 metres across the Thames near Woolwich. The Thames Barrier which became operational in 1982, has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames if a tidal surge is predicted.
When raised, the main gate stand as high as a five-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weights 3700 tonnes.
The Environment Agency maintains and operates the Barrier as well as the capital’s other flood defences. These defences include floodgates such as Barking Barrier and embankment walls.
There is also a Café and Information centre with a working model of the Barrier, films on the construction and inside the Barrier plus more exhibition materials on Flooding, the environment and the future.
