Who are we?

Carina Balbo – Managing Director

A linguist and educationalist at heart, from an early age, Carina’s love for languages led her to pursue a degree in Translation and in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the National University of Córdoba, Argentina. She worked part-time as a freelance translator and full-time as an English teacher at several Language Institutes and Secondary Schools teaching English and English Literature, as well as at the University of Cordoba as an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Tutor.

After moving to the UK, Carina gained an MA in Applied Linguistics & Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at the University of Leicester, with a dissertation on Bilingualism and Language Acquisition. Due to family commitments, she decided to embrace translation as her full-time career, and started becoming involved in assessment. Carina is currently an IELTS examiner at Anglia Ruskin University, and a Spanish examiner for AQA, the International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge International Examinations. She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors, and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) since 2007. In 2010, Carina became a Certified Localisation Professional (via The Institute of Localisation Professionals (TILP)), was awarded an MA (Merit) in Management by the London Metropolitan University in 2012, became a Chartered Linguist (Translator) (Education) in 2015, and has been a Member of the CIOL Council since March 2017.

Carina has combined her skills and over 20 years’ experience in the translation industry and in foreign language teaching, and co-founded My Language Hub Ltd., a Language Service Company (LSC), where she sits as the Managing Director.

Carina is also a member of the International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters (IAPTI) and part of the CIOL and ProZ Mentoring Team a language specialist.

Carina is convinced that foreign language skills are paramount to being able to compete in today’s international market, which is why she believes foreign languages should be taught from an early age in schools, with an emphasis on enjoyment, rather than attainment.

Hugh Ottewell – Executive Director

A former British Army Infantry Officer, Hugh initially gained his experience and knowledge of all things Hispanic by means of a degree in Spanish and Latin American Studies.

He passionately believes that high quality translation and language delivery are essential elements for the global market.  Hugh feels that it is not just what you are saying but how you say it that really counts.  He underpins the concept that technology can assist enormously but the human factor will still provide the necessary polish required to produce first class products.

A fluent Spanish speaker with working French and a knowledge of Portuguese, Hugh has developed a wealth of cultural understanding of the Hispano-Luso world. Hugh is also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and a Chartered Linguist (CL), as well as a Spanish examiner for the International Baccalaureate, AQA, and Cambridge International Examinations.

As the Executive Director at My Language Hub Ltd., Hugh is in a unique position to confidently guide clients along the process of defining the requirement through to end-product.

Translation Division

Our services in more detail:

Translation is the communication of meaning from one language (the source) to another language (the target). It refers to written information, whereas interpretation refers to spoken information. Legal translations are certified by a certified translator, and all our translations are proofread by an independent linguist.

Interpreting is the facilitation of spoken or signed language communication between users of different languages. The two major modes of interpreting are Simultaneous and Consecutive.

Localisation, also referred to as L10, is the process of adapting a product or content to a specific locale or market. Translation is only one of several steps within the localisation process. We provide localisation of websites as well as software.

Proofreading involves examining the target language content and applying corrections before printing. While the text is being proofread, the linguist also carries out the revision of the text, i.e. a bilingual examination of the target language content against the source language content to ensure it is suitable for the agreed purpose.

Post-editing is the process whereby the human linguist amends machine-generated translation to achieve an acceptable final product.

Desktop publishing (DTP), the creation of documents using page layout skills on a personal computer. We use DTP software to generate layouts and produce typographic quality text and images so that the translated document looks and feels like the original.

Linguistic validation is the process of investigating the reliability, conceptual equivalence, and content validity of translations of medical questionnaires.

Terminology management is the study of terms and their use. Terms are words and phrases which describe products, services or industry jargon, they can be anything from a product name to a marketing tag line. Most companies use an increasing number of industry or organisation-specific terms which need to be accurately translated, stored and shared.

Education Division

All Things Hispanic

We offer Spanish classes for all levels, whether you are a complete beginner, a tad rusty or already fairly fluent, aimed at developing the student’s ability to understand, speak, read and write in Spanish. Our teachers are university qualified and have trained specifically to teach Spanish as a foreign language using the most up-to-date teaching methods.

Classes can be taken during the day or in the evening from Monday to Friday, and, by special arrangement, at weekends.

In addition to our general Spanish classes, we offer a wide range of more specific educational programmes, such as preparation and support for GCSE, A Level, plus the IB Diploma Programme at both Standard and Higher levels. Private and corporate tuition are also available.

Again, we have unparalleled experience and an intimate relationship with examination boards. As examiners, we are frequently in direct communication with boards and have up-to-date experience of what they are looking for in terms of performance from candidates.

For a number of years, MLH has delivered Primary After-School Spanish (PASS) to Key Stages 1 and 2 where our main objective has been to imbue a passion for all things Hispanic from as early as possible. This has been such a success that we have recently been engaged to provide Spanish classes within the curriculum of one Primary School.

In the same vein, we also run Parent and Toddler Spanish sessions that enable a second language to be acquired as an inherent element of children’s pre-school development.

MLH has recently launched its first Italian courses for children.  Demand and interest have been so high that we are now widening this opportunity to parents of children and adults in general.

As a First Language

MLH coaches students of English, be they home-schooled or needing further support for GCSE or A Level.

As a Foreign Language

Our EFL sessions enable both students and professionals, with English as their second language, to work towards greater fluency and confidence in the language across the four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the most popular English language proficiency test worldwide for higher education and global migration, including British citizens emigrating to other English-speaking countries such as Canada or Australia . The exam is designed to reflect how you will use English at study, work, and at play, in your new life abroad.

Business Division

Linguistic and Cultural Consultancy

Our business services often incorporate elements from the Translation and Education Divisions but will also assist companies in raising their cultural awareness and understanding of the differences between how business is conducted here in the UK and in South America.

Our goal is to help companies to understand the true value of dynamically preparing for market entry and thus, affording themselves a greater likelihood of success.
