Scottish local authorities increase recycling rate

The amount of waste recycled by local authorities in Scotland has increased.

38.2 per cent of municipal waste collected by councils was recycled or composted in 2010-11, compared to 36.7 per cent in 2009-10.

Local authorities with the best records include Clackmannanshire at 49.8 per cent and those with the lowest rates included the Shetland Islands at 19.5 per cent.

The data was compiled by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

A Scottish Government spokesman said: "When finances are tight, remembering to reduce, reuse and recycle significantly lessens the cost to local authorities of managing and disposing of our household waste, as well as the cost to our own pockets."

"As a whole, local authorities are making great efforts towards zero waste despite Westminster's drastic budget squeeze."
