UK squeezes into top 10 recycling table

Figures released by the European Union’s statistics body Eurostat have shown the UK ranking tied tenth among the top-ranked municipal waste recyclers in Europe during 2015.

According to the data, the UK’s combined recycling and composting rate stood at 43.5 per cent in 2015, down from 43.7 per cent a year earlier.

The European Recycling League Table 2015 ranked Germany as the top municipal waste recyclers in Europe during 2015 with a combined recycling and composting rate of 66.1 per cent, an increase on 2014. The second highest ranked nation was Austria, a whole 10 per cent lower than Germany on 56 per cent.

When considered collectively, EU member states recycled 45.2 per cent of their municipal waste on average.

The data also highlighted the amount of waste generated per person across Europe, with the UK seeing a per person increase from 482kg in 2014 to 485kg in 2015.
