Northamptonshire CC leader loses no confidence vote

Northamptonshire County Council leader Heather Smith has lost a no-confidence motion among her Conservative group members in light of allegations of financial mismanagement.

Smith, who remains leader of the council, is now likely to face calls to resign. In order for her to lose her role there could also be a vote of no confidence at a full council meeting.

At the start of February, the council enforced a section 114 notice, banning new expenditure.

Meanwhile, Anna Earnshaw, director of adult social care at Northamptonshire County Council, told the council’s budget meeting that adult social services were ‘severely underfunded’. With 2,000 unassigned cases, councillors heard it needed to save an extra £9.9 million on top of the £29.3 million of savings for 2018-19 already proposed.

The council’s revised budget savings also include closing 21 small libraries as council-run libraries, removing all bus subsidies from the end of the school term in July 2018, reducing the highways maintenance budget and reducing councillors' allowances. A pay freeze for staff during 2018/19 will also be implemented.
