Wales recycles 44 per cent of its municipal waste
New figures show Wales now recycles or composts 44 per cent of its municipal waste.
The report covers the period from 1 April to 30 June 2010 and betters the same period last year, when 41 per cent was recycled or composted.
The overall amount of municipal waste produced has fallen from 427 thousand tonnes during April to June last year to 413 thousand tonnes in the same period this year, while the amount of residual household waste produced per person has fallen from 77 kg to 71 kg.
The target is to recycle 70 per cent of waste by 2025.
Environment Minister Jane Davidson said: "Recycled materials are a valuable resource that can be sold to generate much-needed funds for local authorities and provide the raw materials for Welsh industry."
"That is why it is so important that we invest in the kind of recycling services that provide the best quality end product, that are the most cost-effective, and which give us the opportunity to keep as much of this end product here in Wales."
