Southampton City Council publishes Level 2 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment

Southampton City Council has published the Level 2 Strategic Flood Risk Assessment, for a better understanding of the risk to the city from flooding over the next 100 years.

Drawn up in partnership with the Environment Agency, it provides detailed information on the nature of the risk from all sources of flooding in the city.

These sources include coastal, river, surface water and ground water and will inform policies and plans to ensure future developments, where appropriate, have been subjected rigorously to the requirements of the national flood risk and development policy.

The report also identifies the range of potential measures available to adapt to climate change and the impacts of flooding on specific sites around the city which will assist future developers in successfully managing flood risk.

Councillor Matthew Dean, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said: "We have now completed the groundwork to establish where flooding could occur and when it is likely to happen, now and in the future."

"This knowledge will allow us to create more stringent plans and policies to ensure the safety of future development in areas at possible risk of flooding. It will also enable developers to understand the potential impacts of flooding on sites and guide them in managing it."
