A survey by Aviva has shown that 85 per cent of Britons are taking positive action when it comes to tackling climate change.
54 per cent believe it is down to each individual to take responsibility to try to prevent it and almost seven in ten were concerned about the future effects of climate change.
However, 46 per cent believe the introduction of a business code would help make a difference and 42 per cent want local councils to provide more facilities to help make 'being green' easier.
Recycling tops the list of things that the UK public does at home in a bid to prevent climate change, with nine out of ten people saying they recycle on a regular basis.
Their other energy-saving actions include 87 per cent turning out the lights when they leave the room, 84 per cent using low energy bulbs and 66 per cent not leaving appliances on standby.
The research also showed that women use low energy bulbs more than men and do not leave appliances on standby as often.
However, men are more inclined to leave the car at home and walk.
The survey showed that only 18 per cent had a climate change policy at their place of work, although they are very keen that the same practices they carry out at home in regard to recycling and energy saving are implemented by their companies.
Recycling, turning off idle printers and using low energy bulbs came top in what people believed to be the most important things instigated at work.
Tom Oxley, Aviva’s corporate responsibility manager said: “We wanted to raise the awareness of climate change and highlight how important it is to people in the UK."
"It’s obvious they are not only aware of the causes and effects of climate change but are taking individual responsibility and making sure they are doing their bit."
