Liverpool Council chief arrested over financial irregularities

Four men including Liverpool City Council chief executive Ged Fitzgerald have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and witness intimidation.

The investigation is being held as part on an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities in the tendering of council contracts to BT and have resulted in the arrests of men – aged 72, 55, 58 and 56.

Lancashire Constabulary has been investigating the now-defunct Liverpool Direct Ltd partnership between the city council and BT since 2013, costing over £2 million.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed: “Four men have been arrested this morning (Monday, May 22nd) in connection with an investigation into conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

“The men, aged 72, 55, 58 and 56, were arrested at addresses in Preston and Merseyside.

“The arrests are part of a wider long-running investigation into allegations of fraud, although none of the men have been arrested today on suspicion of fraud.

“All of the men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and witness intimidation.”

A spokesman for Liverpool City Council said: “We do not comment on personnel matters relating to individual employees."
