Birmingham can become ‘Britain’s economic powerhouse’

Andy Street has vowed to turn the West Midlands into Britain’s economic powerhouse as he enters the race to become the region’s first elected mayor.

The managing director for John Lewis said that the region must ‘not squander this opportunity’, saying that the Midlands faces a choice between growing its economy or falling backwards

He said: “Do we embrace this renaissance by growing the economy in a way which benefits everybody and thus become Britain’s powerhouse? Or, do we look backwards? ”There is only one answer. If I’m the candidate, I will work tirelessly to make this happen.“

If Street is named the Conservative candidate on 29 September, he is expected to step down from his role at John Lewis after nine years at its helm.

Voters in the West Midlands will elect a mayor to take charge of transport and strategic planning on May 4, 2017, with the elected mayor also chairing the new West Midlands Combined Authority, which will take on responsibility for funding of £36.5 million a year over 30 years.

Street will be on the ballot paper alongside Labour MEP Sion Simon and Liberal Democrat businesswoman Beverley Nielson.
