MPs approve snap election

MPs have backed Prime Minister Theresa May's call for a snap election, meaning the poll is set to go ahead on 8 June after.

The call was widely backed by Labour and the Lib Dems with the House of Commons backing the PM by a margin of 522 votes to 13, well over the two-thirds majority needed.

The news comes after the Prime Minister made an unscheduled announcement at Downing Street on 18 April, arguing that a fresh mandate would strengthen her hand in Brexit talks and provide certainty for the future.
