11,000 new homes are anticipated to be built in Cardiff city over the next five years, a report has revealed.
The first monitoring report of the authority’s Local Development Plan also shows an expected uplift in the rate new homes are delivered to help tackle the growing housing need in the city.
Over the past 10 years, 9,242 homes have been built in Cardiff but the figure is anticipated to be surpassed one the next five years with over 11,000 homes set for completion by 2022.
The council is working with developers to deliver sites in the Local Development Plan along with new supporting infrastructure in a phased manner. Through this approach, some 2,000 homes could be achieved annually seeing growth of the housing stock between 1-1.5 per cent per year.
Lynda Thorne, cabinet member for Housing and Communities, said: “Cardiff is a thriving city with one of the fastest growing populations in the UK so addressing demand of all types of housing across the city is vital.
“It's very encouraging to see that the city is set to return to significantly higher rates of delivering new homes.
"We are also one of only a handful of local authorities in the UK who have committed to building new Council homes, and have set a target to deliver 1,000 new council homes over the next five years.
"With more than 8,000 applicants on the waiting list for social housing in the city - 4,600 of whom are in significant housing need, it's important that we are delivering more secure, affordable and decent homes across Cardiff."
