A RECycling Of Used Plastics Limited (RECOUP) survey has revealed that ‘on the go’ collection infrastructure in the UK is inadequate.
The survey of local authorities suggests that there is inadequate collection infrastructure for both collection of recycling and residual waste material, with inconsistent variations in the relationship between costs and benefits. With the significant costs associated with ‘on the go’ collection services, a number of local authorities reported that their budget could be better spent on increasing quantities and reducing contamination in kerbside collections.
Steve Morgan, RECOUP technical manager, said: “We are increasingly seeing the priority placed to ‘On the Go’ services to reduce litter and also provide services for the public to recycle away from home. This survey shows the scale of the challenges that local authorities are facing to provide effective collection services.”
