Lack of funds for meals on wheels

A freedom of information request by the Daily Mail has revealed that 63 out of 140 responding councils have cut meals on wheels services since 2010.

The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned that services such as meals on wheels are ‘coming under increasing threat’ due to the underfunding of adult social care.

The number of meals on wheels handed out across the country fell from 6,736,104 a year to 3,460,583 between 2010-11 and 2015-16.

Councils increased their prices for the service by an average of 20 per cent over the same time period, with some more than doubling the cost over five years to £6 a meal.
