Government warned against ‘one size fits all’ devolution plan

Commenting on the proposed Bill, Cllr David Sparks, chair of the LGA, has said how all parts of the country, ‘from city regions to non-metropolitan areas, need greater freedom from Whitehall’.

Sparks said: “The proposed devolution of transport, housing and policing powers is great news for our larger cities but we want to make sure that the benefits of devolution reach every corner of England and the United Kingdom. This will require different approaches to both governance and the powers needed for different areas, rather than a one-size-fits-all solution.”

Plans to allow English cities power over housing, transport, planning and policing were unveiled in Chancellor George Osborne’s first speech since the Conservative general election success.

Osborne, speaking in Manchester, claimed how the old model of running politics solely from London is ‘broken’ and has made the public ‘feel remote from the decisions that affect their lives’.

Sparks continued: “We are now urging government to go further and set out a new settlement for all of England which devolves decisions on important issues like skills, housing, transport, care and infrastructure. This is vital if the economy is to prosper and good quality public services are to survive."
