A system that allows drivers to appeal parking tickets online has been launched by Brighton and Hove City Council.
The system has been developed by the Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT), in partnership with consumer complaints service Resolver, with the aim to make appealing tickets quicker and easier.
The council will be the first in England to use the new system and the TPT hopes that this initial launch will lead to widespread adoption by the end of 2016.
In 2014-15 Brighton and Hove City Council issued 122,737 parking fines, but only received 465 appeals. It is believed that the current process, which requires drivers to appeal by post and provide paper evidence, could be putting motorists off of appealing wrongly issued fines.
Under the new system, drivers will be able to quickly appeal online using a computer, tablet or smartphone, with the option to immediately upload video and photographic evidence to support their claim.
While the new system will make it quicker and easier for drivers wishing to appeal, it is also expected to save the Council up to £200 per case in processing costs.
Paul Nicholls, Brighton and Hove City Council’s policy and development manager, said: “We are very excited to be the first local authority to use the portal. It reduces the time taken to process appeals, streamlines our communication with appellants and cuts the cost of administration, which benefits all of our residents.”
