One Yorkshire devolution deal backed by councils

Leaders of 18 Yorkshire local authorities have agreed to submit a detailed and concrete proposal to government to deliver a One Yorkshire devolution deal.

The submission follows the request for such a proposal made by former Communities Secretary Sajid Javid at a meeting of the Yorkshire & North Lincolnshire APPG. Leaders welcomed the opportunity, on behalf of the region, to present the agreed plans as offering the most ambitious approach to devolution, securing the maximum possible economic and social benefits for all their communities and the country.

The plan seeks to create a single mayoral combined authority for Yorkshire by May 2020, which would see the region become a significant player in an outward-looking, competitive and prosperous UK, co-producing a Yorkshire Industrial Strategy to provide a compelling basis for government and business investment and drive to the Northern Powerhouse, as well as rebalance the north-south economical divide in the UK.

Javid, now Home Secretary, claimed that the government would not stand in the way of any One Yorkshire proposal that had widespread support and agreed this detailed plan was exactly that.
