Air pollution campaign launched in Sheffield

The Green Party has launched a campaign calling for action to improve air quality in Sheffield, after the city council reportedly failed to meet it pollution targets.

The party has warned that air pollution is linked to 500 premature deaths in Sheffield every year, with many more people suffering from wider health complications.

Part of the campaign includes a survey for Sheffield residents on whether the region should introduce a Clean Air Zone - which would see the most polluting vehicles discouraged from entering the zone through high charges. Plan are already in place for zones in Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton by 2020.

Natalie Bennett, Sheffield Central candidate and former party leader, said: "We are two years on from the expiry of the 2012 strategy. Not only has it clearly failed, but we have no new plan.

"There is no sign of the big city-wide actions needed to address the dangerous hot spots exposing communities around major roads, the city centre and the M1 to pollution above legal limits.

"We have to look urgently at the dangers of diesel cars and dirty buses and taxis that make the city centre a no go area for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions."
