Spending controls in place in Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire County Council has issued a section 114 notice imposing immediate spending controls on the authority, banning practically all spending.

Councillors have revealed that no new expenditure is permitted, with the exception of statutory services for safeguarding vulnerable people, as a result of ’the severe financial challenge’ facing the council and the growing risk that it will not be in a position to ‘deliver a balanced budget by the end of the year’.

Heather Smith, council leader, said that she had written to Communities Secretary Sajid Javid before Christmas that the authority was ‘about to fall over the edge of the cliff’ as a result of ‘a perfect storm’ of uncontrollable increases in demand for services and significant reductions in funding from central government.
