Fears over children’s services in cash-strapped Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire County Council is seeking £70 million of savings over the next few months to balance its books, with reports warning on non-core services facing severe cuts or closure.

Having issued a second Section 114 notice due to the ongoing financial crisis facing the authority on 24 July, the Conservative-led council can no longer ensure that services for vulnerable children and adults will be protected, with the council set to meet to seek support for cutbacks which will reduce statutory services to the bare legal minimum.

It is expected that hundreds of jobs could be as risk, with council leader Matthew Golby describing the restricted core offer as ‘the best service offer we are likely to be able to afford’. Golby also said that the council ‘aims to fulfil our [legal] duties and offers support to those most in need only’.

The latest developments at Northampton County Council further stress the struggles facing many local authorities across the UK, with the National Audit Office previously warning that up to 15 English councils could go bust in the next few years, with likely lack of resources set to hit children’s services and vulnerable older people in care the worst.
