Over £32,000 savings in energy bills per year. How changing your lights can make a huge difference.
When it comes to cutting costs for your business, reducing energy bills is most likely not that high on the list, and within that, lighting is certainly not the first thing that comes to mind. You’d be surprised, however at how much inefficient lighting can actually cost or, to think of the glass being half full, how much can be saved by switching to energy efficient lighting. If your business operates areas that require operational lighting for long hours of the day, this’ll definitely be reflected in your energy bill, especially if you don’t have energy efficient technology. Take a multi-storey car park for example, where lights are on 24hrs a day, 7 days a week. Thats a lot of electricity being used to power those lights - and a big opportunity for saving.
So how do you know how much you can be saving, or even know where to start. There are energy management companies up and down the country offer energy surveys for your business - free of charge.
The car park at the Gloucester Royal Hospital, managed by Indigo did just this. They needed to change their lighting for a of number reasons which included high running and maintenance costs so they called in an energy management company to look at what they could do.
Their existing light fittings used old technology that needed regular replacing and re-lamping. Not only did the lights not last long because of their expected lifetime, the fittings were susceptible to water damage and general wear and tear through constant maintenance.
Another problem they were tying to alleviate was to limit the number of suicides from people jumping from the top floor.
The proposed solution
The first thing was to replace the existing lighting with energy efficient LED Lighting. The lights installed used half as much energy as the existing units when on.
But there were more ways to conserve energy. Photo cell sensors were used on a number of lights (around the perimeter of the car park) so they wouldn’t switch on during the day.
Microwave (motion) sensors were also fitted to control the brightness of the units. The units were programmed to dim to a low level of light when noone is present (cars and people), and once detected go to full brightness for 3 minutes. At night, for long durations of inactivity whole floors switch off.
Such as the makeup of the light fittings, they require little to no maintenance - the units used are designed to last for 50,000 hours - that’s over 5-and-a-half years if constantly left on. The fittings have the LED lights integrated so there is no need to open up and re-lamp and are IP65 rated (water and dustproof).
To try and combat the amount of suicide attempts from the top floor, blue LED flood lights were fitted. There have been many studies to suggest that blue light is calming and has been proven to help prevent suicide attempts on train lines and car parks alike.
How much did they save?
A total of 430 fittings were installed. This included lights installed in stair wells, office as well as the parking spaces.
This resulted in a saving of 59% (680kW) in energy per day with a 20% increase in lux levels. In monetary terms the car park will expect to save £32,266 per year in energy savings alone.
Furthermore, the car park were able to raise funds of £48,000 from the government-led Enhanced Capital Allowance scheme for energy-saving technologies.
In energy saving alone, the return on investment is 14 months.
