The drainage channel in the Camphill Urban Village in Nuneaton, Warwickshire required an erosion control solution that could handle high flow events while being both environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing. The Village Engineer’s solution was to use vegetation reinforced by PYRAMAT® to not only protect the channel from erosion, but to take advantage of  vegetation being one of the best ways to remove storm water runoff  pollutants from entering the adjoining stream.

PYRAMAT, a High Performance Turf Reinforcement Mat (HPTRM) engineered by Propex GeoSolutions, has up to a 75 year design life. It is designed with technology to help lock in seeds and promote rapid root mass development. It has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) as a Best Management Practice to improve water quality and promotes rapid root mass development. Additionally, PYRAMAT is easy to install, providing a significant cost and time savings compared to traditional methods such as rock rip-rap. The innovative material is specially engineered for superior erosion control on steep slopes and vegetated waterways and is designed to withstand non-hydraulic stresses such as mowing and maintenance equipment.

Additionally Propex offers ARMORMAX®, which combines the innovative technology of PYRAMAT and Engineered Earth Anchors™ to provide a dynamic erosion control system. The ARMORMAX® Engineered Earth Armoring Solution is the most advanced flexible armoring technology available for severe erosion and surficial slope stability challenges. It can be used in erosion control applications where additional factors of safety are required, including flood protection, shoreline restoration and slope stabilization.
